Vitalik Buterin dispels sell-off allegations, says he’s ‘donating’

Vitalik Buterin, the Ethereum co-founder, clapped back at critics Saturday, clarifying whether he sold any of the ETH he had acquired since 2018.

“All sales have been to support various projects that I think are valuable, either within the ethereum ecosystem or broader charity,” Buterin said in an Aug. 31 post on X.com.

Buterin cited biomedical research and development as an example. See below.

Buterin addresses accusations

Buterin recently transferred 800 ETH (approximately $2.01 million) to a multisig wallet, which subsequently swapped 190 ETH for 477,000 USD Coin, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar.

The activity piqued the interest of those in the crypto community; some assumed Buterin was dumping his ETH.

This was the second major transfer from Buterin’s wallet in August. 3000 ETH, worth $8.04 million at the time, were moved just weeks before on Aug. 9 to the same multisig wallet.

Buterin clarified that none of his ETH has been sold for personal profit. Also, when ETH from his wallet appears on exchanges, it’s not him selling but the recipients of his donations, he adds.

“If you see an article saying ‘Vitalik sends XXX ETH to [exchange],’ it’s not actually me selling, it’s almost always me donating to some charity or nonprofit or other project, and the recipient selling because, well, they have to cover expenses,” he said.

Buterin breakdown

Buterin holds roughly 90% of his net worth in ETH, underscoring his commitment to the digital asset as a store of value.

Buterin’s claims about supporting “various projects” aren’t unfounded. Crypto.news reported that the 30-year-old entrepreneur donated 199 ETH (roughly $517,000) to ethOS, a mobile operating system based on the Ethereum blockchain.

Buterin has offloaded over 85,000 ($209 million) from his wallets in the past three years, according to Lookonchain data.

One observer is disputing the figure. See below.

Buterin also donated 200 ETH to Effective Altruism Funds, an animal welfare initiative, on Aug. 15.

In 2021, he donated over 50 trillion SHIB tokens, worth over $1 billion at the time, toward the India Covid Relief Fund established by Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal.

Vitalik Buterin moves $2m in ETH to multisig wallet

Vitalik Buterin transferred 800 ETH (worth $2.01 million) to a multisig wallet on Aug. 30. Shortly after, the multisig wallet swapped 190 ETH for 477,000 USDC.

This is not the first significant transfer by Buterin this month. On August 9, the ETH co-founder moved 3,000 ETH, valued at $8.04 million, to the same multisig wallet.

On June 12, 2023, Buterin transferred 1,000 ETH ($1.85 million) to a different multisig wallet, and in April 2023, Buterin moved 2,500 ETH ($4.6 million) to a cold storage wallet.

These transactions suggest Buterin is consolidating or reallocating funds, possibly for security or strategic purposes, but the precise reasons for the transactions remain unknown.

In October 2023, Vitalik Buterin posted on the decentralized social platform Warpcast, that he had not sold ETH for personal gain in over five years.

Instead, he wrote that he often uses his ETH holdings to support various communities and contribute to non-profit organizations.

For instance, in February 2023, Buterin donated Ethereum to aid victims of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey.

Ethereum creator seemingly donated $517k to mobile project ethOS

Vitalik Buterin has likely provided financial support to ethOS, a project promoted as the world’s first Ethereum mobile operating system.

According to Arkham data, Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin sent 199.9 ETH, valued at over $517,000, to a Gnosis Safe multi-signature contract. The leading speculation is that Buterin’s transfer was a donation to the Ethereum phone project called ethOS.

Built by pseudonymous developers at Freedom Factory, this open-source initiative was initially launched on select Android devices in late 2022 and redeployed the following year.

ethOS is an Ethereum-native mobile operating system that allows users to write blockchain code and deploy ETH-based decentralized applications. The team, formed in 2021, plans to release additional hardware offerings this year or next, according to the official ethOS website.

Is ethOS Ethereum’s answer to Solana Saga?

Fifteen years after the debut of Bitcoin (BTC), the blockchain industry is focused on achieving mass adoption by providing easy access to Web3 and real-world utility.

Integrating blockchain standards with mobile devices like smartphones has often been a challenge, but developments in recent years suggest progress.

In June 2022, Solana Labs, the entity behind Solana (SOL), introduced the Saga mobile device. The hardware was built atop Android’s OS and pre-loaded with Solana dapps like Phantom Wallet.

Slow sales initially cast doubt on Saga’s success, and Solana took nearly a year to sell 20,000 units. However, Saga 2.0 improved this track record, selling 100,000 units in pre-orders within a month.

At press time, Saga appeared to be ahead of ethOS, although the two projects have adopted different approaches to merging blockchain and mobile technology. The Ethereum and Solana blockchains have seen significant growth in the past year. If both ethOS and Saga continue to develop, they may eventually become full-fledged competitors in the blockchain mobile market.

Vitalik Buterin discloses $139k salary amid EF spending talks

As the spotlight fell on the Ethereum Foundation’s spending, Vitalik Buterin shared his annual salary and pointed to an upcoming report on the organization’s activities.

Vitalik Buterin told users on X that he earns around $139,000 annually as a member of the Ethereum (ETH) Foundation. Despite his significant ETH holdings, which gave him a net worth of nearly $1 billion as of June 2024, the Ethereum co-creator has not sold Ether tokens for personal gains since around 2018.

Buterin’s public disclosure came amid social media discussions about how the Ethereum Foundation allocates its resources. Many stakeholders raised questions about the gas fees collected by the non-profit organization dedicated to advancing ETH’s general ecosystem.

In response, Buterin and fellow EF member Josh Stark provided a preview of the foundation’s priorities. They indicated that the full report would be available before Devcon SEA, a four-day event scheduled for November in Bangkok, Thailand.

Per the initial data, 36.5% of the Ethereum Foundation’s resources in 2023 were focused on supporting “New Institutions.” In 2022, the same category accounted for 23.8% of EF’s budget, showing increased support for Ethereum-adjacent initiatives.

Buterin explained that this category included grants to organizations like the Nomic Foundation, the Decentralized Research Center, layer-2 analytics provider L2Beat, 0xPARC Foundation, and other entities designed to support Ethereum’s long-term vision.

The second-largest allocation was for layer-1 research and development, which covers on-chain testing and upgrades for Ethereum’s mainnet, such as the Dencun update earlier this year. Stark also noted that the EF has issued several grants to internal teams like Geth and disbursed over $11.4 million to external teams in Q1 2024.

‘Crypto is a damn casino for dum-dums,’ Ethereum developer says

Péter Szilágyi, a core developer at the Ethereum Foundation, recently expressed some disillusionment towards the crypto industry on his X account.

Amid an ongoing Ethereum (ETH) sell-off on Monday, Szilágyi questioned the crypto sector’s focus, suggesting that participants are more interested in becoming the next Vitalik Buterin and engaging in “value extraction” rather than creating useful products and generating genuine value.

Szilágyi criticized the industry for being impulsive and resembling a casino where people buy Lamborghinis when prices rise and suffer when prices fall, without any significant contribution to humanity. Citing companies like SpaceX, he argued that if the industry cannot create genuinely useful products, it might be time to shut it down.

Szilágyi noted that while Bitcoin (BTC) at least strives to become a safe asset, the rest of the industry engages in pointless endeavors.

Ethereum is tanking

This skepticism comes at a turbulent time for Ethereum. The crypto has seen a huge decline, collapsing 32% in a week, as the crypto market records its largest dip this year. Ethereum’s current price of $2,360, down by 12.05% for the day, has pushed it below the lower Bollinger Band at $2,650, indicating it may be oversold.

At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading at $2,360, but it was trading at $2,200 early Monday morning.

Over 278,000 traders were liquidated in the crypto market over the past 24 hours. Bitcoin led liquidations at $362 million, followed by Ethereum at $345.7 million.

Total crypto open interest dropped by 18.7% to $47 billion. The broader cryptocurrency market experienced a significant downturn, with global market cap falling by 13.4% to $1.94 trillion.

Vitalik Buterin offers principles of daily crypto life

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared his insights on the fundamental principles that shape the daily lives of cryptocurrency users.

His remarks came in response to an X thread by crypto project designer OxDesigner, who questioned the long-term value of meme coins within the crypto ecosystem.

OxDesigner expressed concern over the persistent popularity of meme coins. He argued that previous market cycles have significantly expanded the functionality and reach of cryptocurrencies.

These cycles have brought decentralized currency, programmable money, peer-to-peer (P2P) international payments, and unrestricted financial services. However, he questioned how meme coins contribute to improving daily life and felt their impact was more entertainment-focused than enduring.

Buterin outlines crypto’s areas of impact

In response, Buterin highlighted several key areas where crypto is making a difference in daily life. He emphasized the potential of zero-knowledge (zk) reputation systems, identity verification, and credential management. These projects can improve privacy and security with the management of personal information.

He also noted improvements in P2P cross-border payments. Lower fees and better user experiences are making these transactions more accessible and practical for everyday use. In May, MasterCard debuted a product in this area.

Buterin further pointed to the growing relevance of decentralized social platforms, which offer new ways for communities to interact and share information without relying on centralized authorities. One entity in this niche is Farcaster, which Buterin has previously praised.

Prediction markets were another area of focus for the Ethereum founder. He highlighted their increasing usability, as they facilitate more accurate forecasting. Moreover, privacy enhancements were also called to attention.

Buterin mentioned enterprise applications through the scaling protocol Validium. Finally, he discussed zk-based censorship-resistant voting systems, which can ensure the integrity and anonymity of votes.

Essentially, while meme coins might draw attention for their entertainment value, the core principles and applications of crypto are driving significant advancements in how people interact, transact, and secure their information. Buterin had also previously advocated for meme coins to have higher quality.

Tornado Cash TVL, token price surge despite market downturn

Tornado Cash (TORN) price and defi total value locked (TVL) surged while the broader crypto market has been consolidating in bearish condition.

TORN is up by 11.8% in the past 24 hours and is trading at .36 at the time of writing.

The asset’s market cap surpassed the million mark with a daily trading volume of ,000. TORN is currently the 957th-largest cryptocurrency.

Moreover, the asset briefly touched an intraday high of .39 earlier today, at around 08:40 UTC.

Despite the current price rally, TORN is still down by 99.23% from its all-time high of 7.41 on Feb. 13, 2021. Notably, the Tornado Cash token touched an all-time low of .31 on Jan. 10 — five months ago.

The TORN price rally comes while the global crypto market capitalization recorded a 0.5% decline in the past 24 hours and is currently hovering at .67 trillion.

According to data provided by Defi Llama, the TVL in the Tornado Cash defi protocol increased by 7% over the past day, reaching 4.18 million — a level last seen on May 5, 2022. Wrapped Ethereum (WETH) has the largest token allocation in the protocol.

Data shows that the Tornado Cash defi protocol, an Ethereum-based privacy tool, witnessed .63 million in USD inflows today.

Tornado Cash’s downfall started in August 2022, when the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned the platform over money laundering. Notably, authorities arrested its founder, Alexey Pertsev, in the Netherlands a few days after the announcement of the sanctions.

On May 30, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin donated 30 ETH to the Juicebox campaign “Free Alexey & Roman,” showing support to the Tornado Cash developers.
