CoinGecko: Major asset classes outperformed Bitcoin in Q3

CoinGecko: Major asset classes outperformed Bitcoin in Q3

Bitcoin ended Q3 with a modest 0.8% price increase, overshadowed by gold’s significant 13.8% rise, fueled by concerns about the economy and global tensions.

As global uncertainties loom, investors are turning to safe havens for stability, leaving Bitcoin (BTC) trailing with a modest 0.8% price increase in Q3 2024, according to data compiled by crypto price aggregator CoinGecko. For comparison, major assets like gold surged 13.8% amid growing fears of an economic slowdown in the U.S. and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Moreover, even the Japanese Yen demonstrated strong performance, climbing 12.0% after the Bank of Japan’s surprise rate hike alongside rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. In contrast, Bitcoin outperformed only crude oil and the U.S. Dollar Index, as all major fiat currencies gained against the dollar, reflecting shifting market dynamics amid fears of weakening demand and monetary policy adjustments.

Bitcoin’s modest gains lead to decline in trading volumes

While Bitcoin posted modest gains, the top ten centralized crypto exchanges reported a combined spot trading volume of $3.05 trillion, reflecting a nearly 15% decline quarter-on-quarter. Despite this downturn, Binance retained its status as the largest CEX, although its market share slipped below 40% for the first time since January 2022, ending September at 38%.

Crypto.com emerged as the second-largest CEX, leaping from ninth place in Q2, with a remarkable 160.8% growth in trading volume, capturing a 14.4% market share. Meanwhile, OKX and Gate.io struggled, each experiencing trading volume declines exceeding 30%. U.S.-based crypto exchange Coinbase also faced challenges, with a 23.8% drop in trading volumes, resulting in a fall from sixth to tenth place among the top exchanges.

Despite the market’s modest gains in Q3, analysts at CoinGecko noted that Bitcoin increased its dominance to 53.6%, a rise of 2.7% quarter-on-quarter, adding that the “last time BTC was able to achieve such dominance was in April 2021.”

Uyeda: SEC’s crypto approach a ‘disaster for the whole industry’

In a candid interview on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria, SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda sharply criticized the agency’s handling of crypto, acknowledging that its current strategy has been “a disaster for the whole industry.”

Uyeda’s remarks come amid mounting legal challenges, including a fresh lawsuit filed by Crypto.com against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission following the issuance of a Wells notice.

Crypto.com’s lawsuit alleges that the SEC has overstepped its jurisdiction by enforcing regulations on the cryptocurrency market without issuing clear regulatory guidance. The Wells notice — a formal communication from the SEC indicating that enforcement action is likely — accused Crypto.com of operating as an unregistered broker-dealer and securities clearing agency due to its handling of tokens that the SEC deems securities.

Uyeda’s critique of the SEC’s approach highlights a growing frustration within the agency and the wider crypto industry.

“We have been sending this ‘policy through enforcement,’” Uyeda stated, referring to the SEC’s practice of targeting companies with legal actions without offering explicit guidance on how they should operate within existing regulations. “We’ve done nothing to provide guidance on it,” he continued. “And as a result, this has been shaped by the courts. And different courts have ruled in different ways.”

Indeed, the SEC’s reliance on enforcement has led to legal battles, including a high-profile case against Ripple Labs

The courts have often delivered mixed rulings, adding to the uncertainty for crypto firms. While the SEC recently lost a major ruling to Ripple (XRP) regarding the classification of XRP tokens, the agency has already filed an appeal, signaling that these legal struggles are far from over.

Crypto firms are fighting back

Crypto.com’s lawsuit is just the latest in a series of legal confrontations between the crypto industry and the SEC. The lawsuit, sparked by the Wells notice, argues that the agency has been regulating beyond its mandate. Crypto.com’s leadership insists that legal action is necessary to protect the future of cryptocurrency innovation in the United States.

Mark Uyeda refrained from commenting directly on the Crypto.com litigation, but he emphasized the broader issue of the SEC’s failure to offer clarity. “We have not provided interpretive guidance as to what you can and cannot do,” Uyeda said, adding that the lack of clear rules has left companies guessing about how to comply with securities laws.

Uyeda’s comments also touched on the SEC’s broader regulatory philosophy, particularly in relation to environmental, social, and governance mandates. He criticized the agency’s focus on ESG issues, suggesting that such efforts often stray from financial relevance. “It is about micromanaging a lot of what corporations are doing on things that have absolutely no financial purpose,” he said, adding that financial regulators should not be vehicles for social change.

21.co and Crypto.com team up to improve wrapped Bitcoin liquidity

21.co, the parent company of 21Shares, has announced a strategic partnership with Crypto.com.

The collaboration will enhance liquidity and custody solutions for 21.co’s wrapped tokens, starting with its wrapped Bitcoin (BTC).

Wrapped tokens like 21BTC allow users to use Bitcoin on other blockchains, such as Ethereum (ETH), by “wrapping” the original asset in a smart contract.

This allows users to benefit from Bitcoin’s value while also interacting with decentralized finance applications. DeFi is a system of financial services built on blockchain technology, offering alternatives to traditional financial services without intermediaries like banks.

Partnership details

This partnership will allow 21.co to leverage Crypto.com’s vast liquidity pool, meaning that the exchange will help provide Bitcoin to back 21BTC tokens. Crypto.com will also offer competitive fees and advanced trading technology, helping 21.co improve the efficiency of its wrapped Bitcoin product.

Eliezer Ndinga, Head of Strategy at 21.co, highlighted the significance of integrating 21BTC with Crypto.com, citing it as a key step in improving crypto accessibility for users.

“Crypto.com is one of the world’s largest digital assets exchanges serving over 100 million users globally. As one of the world’s largest issuers of crypto ETPs, 21.co brings asset management best practices and operational excellence to the world of wrapped assets.”

The companies plan to expand their partnership further in the future, though specific details are yet to be announced. As demand for crypto products grows, partnerships like this aim to streamline access and improve liquidity for both retail and institutional traders globally.

Crypto.com launches AI tool for blockchain interactions

Crypto.com has introduced the Crypto.com AI Agent SDK, an artificial intelligence-powered software development kit designed to simplify interactions with blockchain functions—even through voice commands.

This tool — available in beta — targets Web3 and AI developers looking to integrate natural language commands into their blockchain activities, per a Crypto.com release.

The AI Agent SDK enables users to execute blockchain commands using everyday language. For example, instead of dealing with complex coding, users can simply say, “Create a new wallet address for me” or “Send 100 PayPal USD to Alice’s address.”

The AI processes these instructions and executes them directly on blockchain networks like Cronos (CRO), Crypto.com’s native blockchain.

The SDK is versatile and can be used on platforms like Telegram, Discord, or any custom user interface, making it adaptable for various applications, according to Crypto.com.

Making blockchain tech more accessible

Crypto.com President and COO Eric Anziani emphasized the potential of combining AI with blockchain, describing the AI Agent SDK as a step toward making Web3 more accessible.

“We are harnessing that potential and giving users the ability to pursue and explore it – a truly collective and decentralized effort in unlocking that integrated power of Web3 and AI.”

Eric Anziani

The goal is to enable both developers and non-technical users to interact with blockchain technology more easily, reducing the learning curve that often deters newcomers.

The AI Agent SDK uses AI models embedded within the software to interpret and execute user commands, serving as a bridge between traditional users and blockchain protocols. As the SDK evolves, Crypto.com plans to expand its capabilities to support more use cases across different blockchain ecosystems, per their release.

This initiative by Crypto.com reflects the growing trend of integrating AI with blockchain to simplify and broaden access, aiming to make decentralized technology more user-friendly for everyone.

Hong Kong’s crypto ambitions tested by licensing issues: report

Hong Kong’s crypto hub ambitions face hurdles as more than a dozen exchanges struggle to secure full licenses due to regulatory concerns.

Cryptocurrency exchanges in Hong Kong seem to be grappling with challenges in securing full licenses as the city pushes to become a crypto hub, per a Bloomberg report, which cites people familiar with the matter.

The city’s Securities and Futures Commission has reportedly identified unsatisfactory practices during on-site inspections of 11 “deemed-to-be-licensed” exchanges, raising doubts about their ability to meet full licensing requirements. The investigation revealed that some exchanges were overly reliant on a small number of executives to manage client asset custody, while others are not “properly guarding against cybercrime risks,” the report says.

The exchanges under scrutiny reportedly include big names such as Crypto.com and Bullish as well as local trading platforms like HKbitEX and PantherTrade.

So far, only two platforms — OSL and HashKey — hold full licenses in Hong Kong. While the SFC aims to issue additional licenses by the end of 2024. the process has already led to the withdrawal of 12 applications, including those from Bybit, Huobi HK, and OKX.

Hong Kong scrutinizes regulation for crypto exchanges

The SFC’s findings emerge as the regulator intensifies its efforts to enforce strict compliance among crypto platforms, with a particular focus on safeguarding client assets and enforcing robust know-your-client protocols.

This heightened scrutiny follows a scandal involving JPEX, an unlicensed crypto platform accused of defrauding over 2,600 victims of more than $200 million. The SFC previously reported that JPEX and crypto influencers had made false or misleading claims on social media, falsely suggesting that the exchange had applied for a virtual asset trading platform license in Hong Kong.

However, the regulator later highlighted that JPEX had not submitted any such application, despite its assertions of being a “licensed and recognized platform for facilitating the trading of digital assets and virtual currency.”
